چکیده

This paper summarizes a method for constructing surface models of arbitrarily-shaped, solid objects by spatially matching 3D surface segments describing the objects. A surface segment of a solid object is a partial description of the object's surface, usually limited to the surface area that can be reconstructed from two corresponding images of the object in an arbitrary orientation. Each surface segment is defined in its 3D coordinate system. The matching algorithm uses heuristic search to align overlapping surface segments of an object into a common 3D coordinate system. It searches for a rigid 3D transformation which minimizes shape differences between a pair of surface segments. Once this transformation is determined, the surface segments are merged into a new segment. This match-and-merge process is iteratively repeated for pairs of available surface segments until a complete model of the object is assembled.

3D Model Segmentation and Representation with Implicit Polynomials

SUMMARY When large-scale and complex 3D objects are obtained by range finders, it is often necessary to represent them by algebraic surfaces for such purposes as data compression, multi-resolution, noise elimination, and 3D recognition. Representing the 3D data with algebraic surfaces of an implicit polynomial (IP) has proved to offer the advantages that IP representation is capable of encoding...

Incremental Line-based 3D Reconstruction using Geometric Constraints

Generating accurate 3D models for man-made environments can be a challenging task due to the presence of texture-less objects or wiry structures. Since traditional point-based 3D reconstruction approaches may fail to integrate these structures into the resulting point cloud, a different feature representation is necessary. We present a novel approach which uses point features for camera estimat...

Place recognition based on matching of planar surfaces and line segments

This paper considers the potential of using 3D planar surfaces and line segments detected in depth images for place recognition. A place recognition method is presented which is based on matching sets of surface and line features extracted from depth images provided by a 3D camera to features of the same type contained in a previously created environment model. The considered environment model ...

A Novel Toolbox for Generating Realistic Biological Cell Geometries for Electromagnetic Microdosimetry

Researchers in bioelectromagnetics often require realistic tissue, cellular and sub-cellular geometry models for their simulations. However, biological shapes are often extremely irregular, while conventional geometrical modeling tools on the market cannot meet the demand for fast and efficient construction of irregular geometries. We have designed a free, user-friendly tool in MATLAB that comb...

3D Models Recognition in Fourier Domain Using Compression of the Spherical Mesh up to the Models Surface

Representing 3D models in diverse fields have automatically paved the way of storing, indexing, classifying, and retrieving 3D objects. Classification and retrieval of 3D models demand that the 3D models represent in a way to capture the local and global shape specifications of the object. This requires establishing a 3D descriptor or signature that summarizes the pivotal shape properties of th...
